glänzen vs scheinen

to shine / seem

'scheinen' and 'glänzen' both have to do with light. 'scheinen' describes light that is emitted or falls somewhere, for example from the sun or a lamp. 'glänzen' is used when a smooth surface reflects light, for example a clean table, wet streets, or jewelry. The words can be confused because both look bright. The important difference is: light 'scheint' (shines), but a surface 'glänzt' (shines / gleams) when light hits it.

Visual example for scheinen

scheinen

Durch das Fenster scheint helles Licht auf den Schreibtisch.
