Grotte vs Loch

hole

'das Loch' and 'die Grotte' can both have to do with a hollow space or an unpleasant place. As a real object, a 'Loch' is an opening or indentation, while a 'Grotte' is a small cave, often in rock or on a coast. Colloquially, both can be used negatively for an ugly or run-down room or place. Learners may confuse them because a grotto can seem like a large hole in rock. For a simple opening, you say 'Loch'; for a small cave or, figuratively, a very messy room, 'Grotte' is more fitting.
