Gulag vs Arbeitslager

labor camp

'Arbeitslager' and 'Gulag' both refer to camps where people were forced to work. The difference lies in the historical context. 'Arbeitslager' (labor camp) is the more general term and can be used for different countries and regimes. 'Gulag' refers especially to the Soviet system of penal and labor camps, above all under Stalin. A single camp within this system can also be called this. The words can be confused because in both cases forced labor and political violence play a role. To be precise: every Gulag was part of a Soviet camp system, but not every Arbeitslager is a Gulag.
