Schwerpunkt and Hauptfach can both refer to the area of a course of study on which someone concentrates particularly. However, Hauptfach is an independent field of study, while Schwerpunkt usually refers to a specialization within a field. Use Hauptfach for the official subject of study and Schwerpunkt for the more specific focus.
