The most important part or central topic of something, of a piece of work, or of an interest. The area on which one concentrates the most.

The word is made up of 'schwer' (heavy) and 'Punkt' (point). It literally means 'the heavy point' or 'the important point'. This origin fits both the physical meaning (center of mass) and the figurative meaning (most important topic).
Der Schwerpunkt der Debatte verlagerte sich schnell auf die Kosten.
The focus of the debate quickly shifted to the costs.
In the meaning 'Fokus' (focus), the word is often used in fixed expressions. The most common are 'einen Schwerpunkt auf etwas legen/setzen' (to place/set a focus on something) and 'der Schwerpunkt liegt auf etwas' (the focus is on something).
Die Firma legt ihren Schwerpunkt auf Nachhaltigkeit.
The company places its focus on sustainability.
When referring to focus, 'Schwerpunkt' (focus) is often combined with adjectives such as 'inhaltlich' (content-related), 'thematisch' (thematic), or 'persönlich' (personal) to describe the area of focus more precisely.

You can recognize the meaning from context. If it is about physics, technology, or vehicles, it means the center of mass. In discussions about topics, education, or work, it refers to the focus.

'das Thema' and 'der Schwerpunkt' can both have to do with the central content of something. 'das Thema' says generally what people are talking, writing, or working about. 'der Schwerpunkt' says which part of it is especially important and gets more attention. Learners may confuse the words because both sound central. The difference is: a topic can be broad, while a focus is the most important or most strongly emphasized part within that topic.
Für die Prüfung haben wir den Schwerpunkt auf Grammatik gelegt.
For the exam, we focused on grammar.
