Usage tips
Word structure
The word is a compound of 'heraus' (out) and the verb 'fordern' (to demand/challenge). A 'Herausforderung' (challenge) is therefore literally a call to 'come out' and face a task or an opponent.
EXAMPLE
Er fordert seinen Konkurrenten zu einem Wettkampf heraus.
He challenges his competitor to a contest.
Typical verbs
'Herausforderung' (challenge) is often combined with certain verbs. You can 'eine Herausforderung annehmen' (accept a challenge), 'suchen' (seek one), or 'meistern' (master/overcome one). You can also 'vor einer Herausforderung stehen' (be facing a challenge).
EXAMPLE
Die neue Stelle ist schwierig, aber ich nehme die Herausforderung an.
The new job is difficult, but I accept the challenge.
To be/present a challenge
The phrases 'eine Herausforderung sein' (to be a challenge) or 'eine Herausforderung darstellen' (to present/constitute a challenge) are used to express that something is difficult. 'Darstellen' is somewhat more formal.
EXAMPLE
Das Projekt stellt für uns alle eine große Herausforderung dar.
The project presents a major challenge for all of us.
Context clue (competition)
The meaning 'Aufforderung zum Kampf' (challenge to fight) is usually found in the context of sports, games, or historical narratives. In modern everyday usage, the meaning 'schwierige Aufgabe' (difficult task) is much more common.
EXAMPLE
Der Schachgroßmeister nahm die Herausforderung des jungen Talents an.
The chess grandmaster accepted the young talent's challenge.

Herausforderung vs Problem
problem
'das Problem' and 'die Herausforderung' can both refer to a difficult situation. 'Problem' sounds more negative: something is not working or is causing worry, and you need a solution. 'Herausforderung' often sounds more active and positive: something is difficult, but you can grow from it or show your abilities. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with difficulty. If you want to emphasize the troublesome point, use 'Problem'. If you want to emphasize the difficult but exciting task, 'Herausforderung' fits better.
Herausforderung
Für die Gruppe ist die lange Reise morgen eine echte Herausforderung.
For the group, tomorrow's long journey is a real challenge.
Problem
Bei der Bewerbung ist das fehlende Zeugnis ein Problem.
In the application, the missing certificate is a problem.
