Usage tips
Past participle of 'herausgeben'
'Herausgegeben' is the past participle of the separable verb 'herausgeben' (to publish / to issue / to give out). This verb is made up of 'heraus' (out) and 'geben' (to give). The basic idea is therefore to give something outward.

Grammatical use
As a past participle, 'herausgegeben' can have three functions: as part of the present perfect, in the passive, or as an adjective before a noun.
EXAMPLE

The author published his first book himself.
Context clues
You can recognize the meaning from the object: with media ('Buch' (book), 'Magazin' (magazine)), it means 'published'. With official things ('Dokument' (document), 'Ausweis' (ID card)), it means 'issued'. With money, it means 'given back as change'.

Die vom Museum herausgegebene Broschüre enthält viele Informationen.
The brochure published by the museum contains a lot of information.

The person or institution that publishes or edits a book or magazine is called 'der Herausgeber' (or 'die Herausgeberin') (the editor/publisher). You often find this information in the imprint of a book.

herausgegeben vs erschienen
published / present
'erschienen' and 'herausgegeben' can both mean that a book, magazine, film, or piece of music is publicly available. 'erschienen' describes more the result: the work is now there and can be read, watched, or bought. 'herausgegeben' places more emphasis on the action or on the person or organization responsible for publishing the work. Learners may confuse the words because both fit in the context of media. In practice: a book 'ist erschienen' (has been published / has come out); a publisher or editorial team 'hat es herausgegeben' (published it).

Die Zeitschrift wird von einem kleinen Verlag in Berlin herausgegeben.
