Regional usage
The word 'heuer' (this year) is used mainly in Austria and southern Germany, especially Bavaria. In other parts of Germany it is uncommon; there, 'dieses Jahr' (this year) is used instead.
EXAMPLE
Heuer ist die Weinernte besonders gut.
The grape harvest is especially good this year.
Sentence position
As an adverb, 'heuer' (this year) can stand in position 1 at the beginning of the sentence, which triggers inversion (verb in position 2). It can also stand in the middle of the sentence like other time expressions.
EXAMPLE
Heuer haben wir einen sehr kalten Winter.
This year we have a very cold winter.
Related adjective
The adjective 'heurig' is derived from 'heuer' (this year) and means 'this year's'. This form is especially well known in the phrase 'der heurige Wein' (this year's wine), meaning wine from this year's harvest.
