A tavern in Austria, usually in wine-growing regions, where winegrowers serve their young wine from the most recent harvest and often offer simple cold dishes.

Usage tips
Regional use
'Der Heurige' (wine tavern/young wine) is a typically Austrian word and concept. It is closely connected with wine culture in eastern Austria, especially in Vienna and the surrounding area.
EXAMPLE
Wenn du in Wien bist, musst du unbedingt zu einem Heurigen gehen.
If you're in Vienna, you absolutely have to go to a Heuriger.
Word structure
The word comes from the adjective 'heurig' (this year's). 'Heurig' in turn comes from 'heuer', the southern German and Austrian word for 'this year'. A 'Heuriger' is therefore literally the wine 'from this year'.
EXAMPLE
Die heurige Ernte war besonders gut.
This year's harvest was especially good.
Context clue
You can tell whether the tavern or the wine is meant from the verb. If you 'zum Heurigen gehen' (go to the Heuriger) or 'beim Heurigen sitzen' (sit at the Heuriger), the tavern is meant. If you 'einen Heurigen trinken' (drink a Heuriger), the wine is meant.
EXAMPLE
Wir treffen uns heute Abend beim Heurigen.
We're meeting at the Heuriger this evening.

Heuriger vs Sturm
storm
'der Sturm' and 'der Heuriger' normally belong to completely different areas. Here, 'Sturm' means a strong weather event with a lot of wind. 'Heuriger' is an Austrian word and means either a wine tavern or young wine. The words can be confused especially when reading texts about travel or Austria and both words appear in similar situations. In terms of meaning, however, the difference is simple: 'Sturm' is weather, while 'Heuriger' has to do with wine and a tavern.
