Only before a noun
'Hintere' is used only before a noun and is declined like an ordinary adjective: 'der hintere Eingang' (the rear entrance), 'im hinteren Teil' (in the rear section), 'die hinteren Reihen' (the rear rows). After 'sein' (to be), use the adverb 'hinten' (at the back) instead: 'Der Eingang ist hinten' (The entrance is at the back).
