Word structure
The adverb 'hinzu' is composed of the words 'hin' (movement toward a place) and 'zu' (direction). So it literally describes a movement or conceptual addition 'there toward it'.
EXAMPLE
Zum Hauptgericht gab es einen Salat und hinzu bestellte ich ein Glas Wein.
With the main course there was a salad, and in addition I ordered a glass of wine.
Word order
When 'hinzu' stands at the beginning of a sentence, the verb follows directly after it. This structure is often used with the verb 'kommen' (to come) to introduce an additional point or argument.
EXAMPLE
Das Hotel war teuer. Hinzu kam, dass das Zimmer nicht sauber war.
The hotel was expensive. In addition, the room was not clean.

The meaning of movement toward a place is rare today and sounds formal or outdated. It is hardly used anymore in modern German.
