Expresses movement toward a place or person. This meaning is rather formal or outdated.
Er trat aus der Tür und ging zum Tor hinzu.
He stepped out of the door and went toward the gate.
The adverb 'hinzu' is composed of the words 'hin' (movement toward a place) and 'zu' (direction). So it literally describes a movement or conceptual addition 'there toward it'.

Fresh bread is added to the salad.
Auf dem Tisch steht neben dem Salat auch frisches Brot.
There is also fresh bread on the table alongside the salad.
