Auch and außerdem add additional information. Because of its position, auch often refers to a specific part of the sentence, whereas außerdem usually adds to the following thought as a whole. Use auch for a targeted addition within the sentence and außerdem for another point or argument.

I’ll have a piece of cake for dessert and also order a coffee.
