Usage tips
Separable verb
'Hochladen' (to upload) is a separable verb. The prefix 'hoch-' comes at the end in a main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
EXAMPLE
Sie lädt die Präsentation auf den Server hoch.
She uploads the presentation to the server.
Structure of the verb
The verb consists of the directional particle 'hoch' (up) and the verb 'laden' (to load). The meaning of 'hochladen' (to upload) is therefore literally 'to load upward', which describes the transfer to a central server.
EXAMPLE
Kannst du das Video für mich hochladen?
Can you upload the video for me?
Sentence structure with 'auf'
The destination of the upload is indicated with the preposition 'auf' and the accusative. You upload something (accusative) onto a platform (accusative).
EXAMPLE
Er hat seine Bewerbungsunterlagen auf die Webseite der Firma hochgeladen.
He uploaded his application documents to the company's website.
Typical objects
Typical things that are uploaded are digital data. These include 'Fotos' (photos), 'Videos' (videos), 'Dokumente' (documents), 'Dateien' (files), or 'Musik' (music).
EXAMPLE
Vergiss nicht, die Dokumente für das Meeting hochzuladen.
Don't forget to upload the documents for the meeting.

hochladen vs übertragen
to transmit / transfer
'übertragen' and 'hochladen' can both mean that data goes from one device to another system. 'übertragen' is more general: data can be sent between two computers, devices, or places, in different directions. 'hochladen' is more specific. You upload data from your own device to a server, a website, or an online platform. The words can be confused because uploading is a form of transmitting. If you are talking generally about sending data, 'übertragen' fits. If the file is going onto a website or into the cloud, 'hochladen' is more natural.
