The word is derived from 'der Imker' (beekeeper). The ending '-ei' often refers both to a person's activity (e.g. the baking activity of a baker) and to the place where this activity is carried out ('die Bäckerei' — bakery).

When the activity is meant, 'Imkerei' (beekeeping) is often used with verbs like 'betreiben' (to practice/run), 'beginnen' (to begin), or described as a hobby: 'die Imkerei als Hobby haben' (to have beekeeping as a hobby).
