apiary
The place or business where bees are kept; the collection of beehives belonging to a beekeeper.
Wir haben die Imkerei am Waldrand besucht und dort frischen Honig direkt vom Erzeuger gekauft.
We visited the apiary at the edge of the forest and bought fresh honey there directly from the producer.
The word is derived from 'der Imker' (beekeeper). The ending '-ei' often refers both to a person's activity (e.g. the baking activity of a baker) and to the place where this activity is carried out ('die Bäckerei' — bakery).
Die Bäckerei an der Ecke ist für ihr gutes Brot bekannt.
The bakery on the corner is known for its good bread.
You can tell whether the activity or the place is meant from the verb. Verbs like 'betreiben' (to run/practice) or 'lernen' (to learn) refer to the activity. Verbs like 'besuchen' (to visit), 'finden' (to find), or prepositions like 'in der' (in the) refer to the place.
Er möchte die Imkerei als Hobby betreiben.
He would like to take up beekeeping as a hobby.
Wir kaufen unseren Honig direkt in der Imkerei am Dorfrand.
We buy our honey directly from the apiary at the edge of the village.
When the activity is meant, 'Imkerei' (beekeeping) is often used with verbs like 'betreiben' (to practice/run), 'beginnen' (to begin), or described as a hobby: 'die Imkerei als Hobby haben' (to have beekeeping as a hobby).
Immer mehr junge Leute interessieren sich für die Imkerei.
More and more young people are becoming interested in beekeeping.
