Independence vs Freiheit
freedom
'die Freiheit' and 'die Independence' can both have to do with being free or independent. In German, however, 'Freiheit' is the normal word for personal or political freedom. 'Independence' is an English loanword and is used in German almost only in fixed contexts related to U.S. history, especially in 'Independence Day'. Learners may confuse the words because 'Independence' sounds like 'Unabhängigkeit' (independence). But in normal German sentences, you do not say 'Independence'; you say 'Freiheit' or, when you specifically mean the independence of a country, 'Unabhängigkeit'.

Im Englischunterricht sprechen wir über die Independence der Vereinigten Staaten.
In English class, we talk about the independence of the United States.
