Adjectives that refer to countries are often formed with the ending '-isch' (-ian/-ic). 'Iranisch' (Iranian) is derived directly from the country name 'der Iran' (Iran).

Although 'iranisch' (Iranian) can describe the languages of Iran, the more specific name 'Persisch' (Persian) or 'Farsi' is usually used for the country's main language.

Kurdish
'iranisch' and 'kurdisch' can be confused because both have to do with people, languages, and cultures in a similar region. But they do not mean the same thing. 'iranisch' refers to the state of Iran, its population, culture, or language. 'kurdisch' refers to the Kurds, their language, culture, or settlement area, Kurdistan. A person can, for example, come from Iran and be Kurdish, but 'iranisch' and 'kurdisch' describe different affiliations. So the important point is: 'iranisch' asks about the connection to Iran, while 'kurdisch' asks about the connection to the Kurds.
