Usage tips
Travel and location
For travel there, use 'nach Irland' (to Ireland). For being or staying there, use 'in Irland' (in Ireland) with the dative case; both expressions are used without an article.

Expressing origin

EXAMPLE
Der Käse, den wir gekauft haben, stammt aus Irland.
The cheese we bought comes from Ireland.
Context clue
When discussing topics such as government, laws, or EU membership, 'Irland' (Ireland) usually refers to the country. The phrase 'die Insel Irland' (the island of Ireland) makes it clear that the whole island, including Northern Ireland, is meant.
EXAMPLE
