A political ideology that seeks to establish a social and state order based on a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam and Sharia. The term is distinct from Islam as a religion.

'Islamismus' is more specific: it means a political ideology that wants to shape the state and society according to a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam. Learners may confuse the words because Islamism can be a form of extremism. What matters is: not all extremism is Islamism, and Islamism is not the same as Islam as a religion.
