Islamization
The process or effort of increasing the influence of Islamic norms, values, and laws in a society or state. The term is often used in political debates and frequently has a negative connotation.

The debate about an alleged Islamization of Europe is conducted very emotionally.
The word is clearly structured: the stem 'Islam' is combined with the ending '-isierung' (-ization). The ending '-ung' always indicates that it refers to a process or the result of an action.

Islamism
'Islamismus' and 'Islamisierung' sound similar and both often appear in political discussions. But they do not mean the same thing. 'Islamismus' is a political ideology that seeks to shape a society according to a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam. 'Islamisierung' describes a process or effort through which Islamic norms or rules gain more influence in a society. So you can talk about Islamism as an ideology and Islamization as a development or goal. Another important point: neither word is simply synonymous with Islam as a religion.
