Jargon vs Dialekt

dialect

'der Dialekt' and 'der Jargon' both have to do with a special way of speaking. 'Dialekt' means a regional form of language, for example from Bavaria, Saxony, or Switzerland. Pronunciation, words, and grammar may differ from the standard language. 'Jargon', on the other hand, belongs to a particular group, for example doctors, programmers, or young people. It can be hard for outsiders to understand and can sometimes also be meant in a negative way. The words are easy to confuse because both do not sound like standard language. The simple guideline is: Dialekt belongs to a region, Jargon to a group or a specialist field.
