We have to take the baby to the pediatrician for the next checkup.
Usage tips
Compound structure
The word is built very logically: it consists of 'Kinder' (children) and 'Arzt' (doctor). So it is literally a doctor for children.
EXAMPLE
Ein guter Kinderarzt braucht viel Geduld.
A good pediatrician needs a lot of patience.
Productive word formation
The second part of the word, '-arzt' (-doctor), is used in many words to refer to a medical specialist. If you know this pattern, you will also understand words like 'Zahnarzt' (dentist), 'Augenarzt' (eye doctor/ophthalmologist), or 'Frauenarzt' (gynecologist).
EXAMPLE
Nach dem Sportunfall musste er zum Sportarzt.
After the sports accident, he had to go to the sports physician.
Correct preposition
When going to a doctor, you use the preposition 'zu' + dative. When you are there, you use 'bei' + dative.
EXAMPLE
Morgen gehe ich mit meiner Tochter zur Kinderärztin.
Tomorrow I'm going to the pediatrician with my daughter.

Kinderarzt vs Arzt
doctor
'der Arzt' and 'der Kinderarzt' both refer to medically trained people. 'Arzt' is the general word and can refer to many specialties. 'Kinderarzt' is more specific: this person treats infants, children, and adolescents. Learners may confuse the words because a pediatrician is also a doctor. If it is not important which specialty is meant, 'Arzt' is enough. If it is about a child or adolescent, 'Kinderarzt' is more natural and more precise.
Kinderarzt
Als der kleine Paul Fieber bekam, riefen seine Eltern den Kinderarzt an.
When little Paul developed a fever, his parents called the pediatrician.
Arzt
Wegen der starken Kopfschmerzen macht Lisa einen Termin beim Arzt.
Because of her severe headache, Lisa makes an appointment with the doctor.
