This can be at school, at university, or in a club, and it often lasts only one day. 'Klassenfahrt' is more specific: a school class travels away with teachers, usually for several days. Learners may confuse the words because both can have to do with school and travel. If it is about a school class on a longer trip, 'Klassenfahrt' is more precise; if the educational or research purpose is central, 'Exkursion' fits better.
