The article changes with the case; it is shown in colour.
'Klugscheißer' is made up of 'klug' (clever) and 'Scheißer' (shitter). The second part deliberately makes the term crude and derogatory, reinforcing the criticism of the person.
Er wurde wegen seiner ständigen Belehrungen als Klugscheißer bezeichnet.
He was called a smartass because of his constant lecturing.
The word is clearly informal and insulting, but among friends it can also be used jokingly or self-deprecatingly. In a polite or formal conversation, it can quickly come across as hurtful.
Ich will ja kein Klugscheißer sein, aber diese Zahl stimmt nicht.
I don't want to be a smartass, but that number is incorrect.
'Klugscheißer' frequently follows 'sein' (to be) or appears in the expression 'sich als Klugscheißer aufspielen' (to act like a smartass). With 'ein' (a) or 'kein' (no), the person is directly judged.
Im Unterricht spielt er sich ständig als Klugscheißer auf.
He is constantly acting like a smartass in class.
