Knödel vs Klumpen

lump

'Klumpen' and 'Knödel' can both describe something solid and shaped. But the difference is important: a 'Klumpen' is an irregular mass made of any material. It may have formed by chance and does not have to have anything to do with food. A 'Knödel' is a food, usually round in shape and made from dough, potatoes, or bread. The words can be confused because a badly shaped dumpling can look like a lump. For food, you say 'Knödel'; for a shapeless mass, you say 'Klumpen'.
