The state in which there is less of something (e.g., resources, goods, time) than is needed or desired. It describes a shortage or insufficient availability.

'Knappheit' (scarcity) is the noun form of the adjective 'knapp' (scarce/tight). The ending '-heit' is often used to form abstract nouns from adjectives that describe a state.

To say what there is a shortage of, German uses the preposition 'an' followed by the dative. This pattern is very common.

Mangel places more emphasis on the specific absence or deficit in relation to what is needed. Knappheit, by contrast, emphasizes that a supply or resource is available only in limited quantities. Use Mangel for an identified deficit and Knappheit for a situation of limited supply.
