The state in which there is less of something (e.g., resources, goods, time) than is needed or desired. It describes a shortage or insufficient availability.

'der Mangel' and 'die Knappheit' can both mean that there is not enough of something. However, 'Mangel' is more general: it can refer to missing things, but also to a flaw or defect in something. 'Knappheit' is especially suitable when something is available only in too small a quantity, for example time, money, water, or housing. Learners may confuse the words because both describe a lack. As a simple guide: when there is too little of a resource, 'Knappheit' often sounds more precise; for a flaw or defect, you say 'Mangel'.
