The elected representative body and main political organ of a rural district in Germany. The district council decides on important matters of the district, such as the budget or local public transport.

The word 'Kreistag' (district council) consists of 'Kreis' (here in the sense of rural district) and 'Tag'. The component '-tag' here does not mean 'Tag' (day) as in the weekly calendar, but refers to an assembly, similar to 'Bundestag' or 'Reichstag'.

A Kreistag is a political body. Typical verbs used with it are 'tagen' (to convene/be in session), 'beschließen' (to decide/approve), 'entscheiden' (to decide), and 'beraten' (to discuss/deliberate).

To express that something happens or is discussed within the body, you use the preposition 'in' with the dative: 'im Kreistag' (in the district council).

'der Landtag' and 'der Kreistag' are both political representative bodies that make decisions for a specific area. The most important difference is the level: the 'Landtag' belongs to a federal state and passes laws for that state. 'Landtag' can also mean the building where this parliament works. The 'Kreistag' belongs to a rural district and decides on important issues in the district, for example money, bus connections, or schools. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with regional politics. As a guide: Landtag = federal state, Kreistag = rural district.
