'die Erhöhung' and 'die Kürzung' both describe a change in quantities, money, or services. However, they point in opposite directions. With an 'Erhöhung', something becomes more, for example a price, a salary, or a tax. With a 'Kürzung', something becomes less, often a budget, a benefit, or a text. In conversations about money, work, or politics, the contrast is especially clear: more means 'Erhöhung'; less means 'Kürzung'.
