'das Institut' and 'das Laboratorium' can both have to do with science and research, but they are not the same thing. 'Institut' refers to an institution, a department, or also the building of a scientific organization. 'Laboratorium' refers to a room or building with special equipment for experiments and analyses. A laboratory can therefore be part of an institute. Learners may confuse the words because institutes often have labs. If you mean the organization, say 'Institut'; if you mean the workspace with equipment, say 'Laboratorium' or, in everyday language, usually 'Labor'.
