Lady vs Dame

lady / queen / checkers

'die Dame' and 'die Lady' can both refer to a woman in a respectful or refined way. 'Dame' is a normal polite German word, for example in forms of address or for a social companion. 'Lady' sounds more strongly connected with elegance, nobility, or very good manners, and often has a special style. It can also sound ironic if someone acts very refined. Learners may confuse the words because both seem polite. In everyday use, 'Dame' is more neutral; 'Lady' is more noticeable and only fits in certain situations.
