A procedure in cashless payment transactions in which a payee is authorized to debit an amount of money from the payer's account. Prior consent (a mandate) from the account holder is required for this.

The word is made up of 'die Last' (load/burden) and 'die Schrift' (writing/document). Here, 'Last' does not mean 'weight', but rather the 'debiting' of an account, meaning a withdrawal. So a 'Lastschrift' (direct debit) is literally a document that instructs an account debit.

transfer / referral
Both words refer to a cashless payment from an account. With a Überweisung, the person making the payment initiates the transfer, while with a Lastschrift, the recipient debits the amount from the account with the account holder's consent. If you actively send the payment yourself, Überweisung is usually the appropriate term; for regular automatic collection, Lastschrift is the right term.
