To cause someone regret or sympathy; to be unpleasant or painful for someone. The verb is especially common in the fixed expression „Es tut mir leid“ (I'm sorry).

„Leidtun“ (to be sorry) is made up of „leid“ (sorry) and „tun“ (to do). The verb literally describes something being sorry to someone or causing regret.
Seine harten Worte taten ihm später leid.
He later regretted his harsh words.
In the most common construction, „es“ (it) is the subject, the affected person is in the dative, and „leid“ (sorry) comes at the end: „Es tut jemandem leid“ (someone is sorry). This can be followed by a dass-clause or an infinitive with „zu“ (to).
Es tut meinem Bruder leid, dass er zu spät gekommen ist.
My brother is sorry that he arrived late.
Es tut ihr leid, den Termin vergessen zu haben.
She is sorry to have forgotten the appointment.
„Leidtun“ (to be sorry) is separated in a main clause: the inflected form of „tun“ (to do) comes in second position, and „leid“ (sorry) comes at the end of the sentence. In a subordinate clause, the verb remains written as one word; in the perfect tense, „leidgetan“ (been sorry) is also written together.
Er sagt, dass ihm die Bemerkung leidtut.
