Leuchter vs Lampe

lamp

'die Lampe' and 'der Leuchter' can both give light or hold light sources. 'Lampe' is the normal general word for a device with artificial light. 'Leuchter' more often means a holder for candles or for several lamps, often with several arms. A Leuchter often seems more decorative or special, for example as a Kerzenleuchter (candlestick / candleholder) or Kronleuchter (chandelier). The words can be confused because both are connected to lighting. In everyday language, however, people usually say 'Lampe' when they mean a simple lighting device. 'Leuchter' fits when the holder itself is important or when it has several light points.
