For describing one's political identity, the pattern 'sich als Liberaler bezeichnen' (to describe oneself as a liberal) is useful. 'sich als Liberaler verstehen' (to see oneself as a liberal) expresses how a person views their own political stance.
Mein Nachbar bezeichnet sich als Liberaler, gehört aber keiner Partei an.
My neighbor describes himself as a liberal but does not belong to any political party.
In reports about elections or coalitions, 'die Liberalen' (the liberals) often refers to members of a liberal political party. When talking about personal beliefs, however, party membership does not necessarily have to be implied.
Nach der Wahl verhandeln die Liberalen mit zwei anderen Parteien über eine Koalition.
After the election, the liberals are negotiating with two other parties about forming a coalition.
Er ist ein Liberaler, der seine persönliche Freiheit sehr schätzt und keiner Partei angehört.
He is a liberal who greatly values his personal freedom and does not belong to any political party.
The phrase 'ein überzeugter Liberaler' (a committed liberal) emphasizes that someone firmly supports their political views. This phrase is often used with time expressions such as 'seit seiner Jugend' (since his youth) or 'sein Leben lang' (all his life).
Ihr Großvater war sein Leben lang ein überzeugter Liberaler.
Her grandfather was a committed liberal all his life.
