Word composition
'Lidschatten' is made up of 'Lid' (eyelid) and 'Schatten' (shadow). The word therefore originally describes color or a shadow effect on the eyelid.
EXAMPLE
Der goldene Lidschatten passt gut zu ihrem Kleid.
The golden eyeshadow goes well with her dress.
Typical collocations
'Lidschatten' is especially often used with verbs such as 'auftragen' (to apply), 'auflegen' (to apply), 'verwischen' (to smudge), and 'entfernen' (to remove). Color descriptions and expressions such as 'eine Lidschattenpalette' (an eyeshadow palette) are also very common.

Applying and removing
When describing application, 'Lidschatten' is usually used with 'auf' and the accusative: You apply it to the eyelid or eyelids. When removing makeup, the eyeshadow is removed again.
