The word 'Logbuch' (logbook) comes from seafaring. A 'Log' (a piece of wood) was thrown into the water to measure speed. So the 'Logbuch' (logbook) was the book in which these and other measurement data from the journey were recorded.

'das Protokoll' and 'das Logbuch' are both written records of important information. 'Protokoll' is often used for meetings, negotiations, or experiments; it records the course and results. 'Logbuch' is more of an ongoing chronological record, classically on a ship or in an aircraft, but also in projects or IT. The words can be confused because both document things. Minutes often summarize a specific event, while a logbook collects entries over a longer period of time.
