Context clue
You can tell which lira is meant from the country. If people are talking about Turkey, the current currency is meant. In connection with Italy, 'Lira' (lira) always refers to the historical currency before the introduction of the euro.
EXAMPLE
Ein Döner in der Türkei kostet etwa 300 Lira.
A döner in Turkey costs about 300 lira.
Use with numbers
When a currency unit is used with a number greater than one, it often remains singular. So you say '100 Lira' (100 lira), not '100 Liren'.
EXAMPLE
Das Hotelzimmer kostet 2500 Lira pro Nacht.
The hotel room costs 2,500 lira per night.
Typical verbs
As with other currencies, typical verbs like 'bezahlen' (to pay), 'kosten' (to cost), 'umtauschen' (to exchange), or 'wechseln' (to change/exchange) are used.
EXAMPLE
Am Flughafen kann man direkt Geld in türkische Lira wechseln.
At the airport, you can exchange money directly into Turkish lira.

'der Euro' and 'die Lira' are both names of currencies. You use them when talking about money, prices, or paying. The difference lies in the country and the time period: the euro is the currency today in many countries of the European Union. The lira is the currency of Turkey today; it was also formerly the currency in Italy and some other countries. The words can be confused because both function like normal money names. So always pay attention to which country or trip is being discussed.
