'der General' and 'der Marshal' can both refer to very high military ranks. In German, 'General' is the normal term for a high-ranking officer in the army or air force. 'Marshal' is a foreign or specialized term and refers only in certain countries to a very high rank, similar to a field marshal. In other meanings, 'Marshal' can also refer to a law enforcement officer in the United States or to a person at sporting events. That is why the word is easy to confuse. If you are speaking generally about a high-ranking officer, 'General' is usually correct; 'Marshal' only fits when that exact title is meant.
