An apartment that you have not bought, but for which you pay money to a landlord each month.
example
Nach langer Suche haben wir endlich eine schöne Mietwohnung im Stadtzentrum gefunden.
After a long search, we finally found a beautiful rental apartment in the city center.
Usage tips
Compound word
The word is made up of 'die Miete' (rent) and 'die Wohnung' (apartment). So it literally describes an apartment for which you pay rent.
EXAMPLE
Eine bezahlbare Mietwohnung in der Innenstadt zu finden, ist nicht einfach.
Finding an affordable rental apartment downtown is not easy.
Prepositions and case
Pay attention to the difference with the preposition 'in': movement into the apartment requires the accusative, while being in the apartment requires the dative.
EXAMPLE
Wir ziehen nächsten Monat in eine neue Mietwohnung.
We are moving into a new rental apartment next month.
Typical verbs
Common verbs in connection with a rental apartment are 'eine Mietwohnung suchen' (to look for a rental apartment), 'finden' (to find), 'mieten' (to rent), or 'kündigen' (to terminate the lease).
EXAMPLE
Er muss seine alte Mietwohnung bis Ende des Monats kündigen.
He has to terminate the lease on his old rental apartment by the end of the month.

Mietwohnung vs Wohnung
apartment
'die Wohnung' and 'die Mietwohnung' both refer to a living unit in a building. 'Wohnung' is more general: it can be rented or bought. 'Mietwohnung' is more specific and says that you regularly pay rent to a landlord for the apartment. Learners may confuse the words because in everyday life many apartments are rental apartments. If ownership or paying rent is not important, 'Wohnung' is enough. If you want to make clear that the apartment was not bought, 'Mietwohnung' fits better.
Mietwohnung
Am Abend liest Alina den Vertrag für ihre neue Mietwohnung.
In the evening, Alina reads the contract for her new rental apartment.
Wohnung
Hannah sucht eine größere Wohnung, weil ihr Wohnzimmer zu klein ist.
Hannah is looking for a bigger apartment because her living room is too small.
