The word is made up of 'mit' (with/along) and 'Schnitt' (cut/edit, from 'schneiden' (to cut)). It describes a recording that runs along while an event is taking place—you are, so to speak, 'recording along' with it.

'Mitschnitt' (recording) is often combined with the medium or the type of event. Typical examples are 'Konzertmitschnitt' (concert recording), 'Radiomitschnitt' (radio recording), or 'Telefonmitschnitt' (telephone recording).

'die Aufnahme' and 'der Mitschnitt' can both mean a stored audio or video recording. 'Aufnahme' is the more general term and fits many situations, for example music, video, speech, or data. 'Mitschnitt' is used especially when something was recorded live, for example a concert, a broadcast, or a conversation. The words can be confused because a 'Mitschnitt' is also an 'Aufnahme'. But not every 'Aufnahme' is a 'Mitschnitt': a planned studio session is more likely an 'Aufnahme', while a live-recorded event is more likely a 'Mitschnitt'.
