Middle Ages
The historical period in Europe between antiquity and the modern era, lasting roughly from the 6th to the 15th century. This period is characterized, among other things, by feudalism, chivalry, and the strong influence of the church.

Stone Age
Figuratively, both Mittelalter and Steinzeit can be used to criticize a backward state. Mittelalter focuses more on outdated social rules or institutions, while Steinzeit focuses more on very primitive technology or general conditions. The exact choice depends on what kind of backwardness is meant.
