You can talk about the middle of a room, a sheet of paper, or a street. 'das Mittelfeld' is more specific: in sports, it is the middle area of the playing field or the players there. In rankings, it means a middle position, neither at the very top nor at the very bottom. Learners may confuse the words because both sound related to 'mittig' (central / in the middle). If it is simply about the central place, you say 'Mitte'. If it is about sports or a position within a group, 'Mittelfeld' is more natural.
