The preposition is crucial: 'ins Zentrum' (into the center, with accusative) describes movement toward the middle, while 'im Zentrum' (in the center, with dative) describes a position in the middle. This rule applies to almost all meanings.

'das Auge' and 'das Zentrum' can both mean the middle part of something. But this is only true in one special case: in a cyclone or hurricane, the calm center is called 'das Auge' (the eye). 'das Zentrum' is much more general and fits the center of many things, for example a city, a circle, or a system. When talking about storms and weather, 'das Auge' is the more precise technical term. In most other situations, you say 'das Zentrum'.
