The geographical region that includes the Mediterranean Sea and all neighboring countries and coastal areas in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The word is built from three parts: 'Mittel-' (middle) + 'Meer' (sea) + 'Raum' (region/space). The 'Mittelmeer' (Mediterranean Sea) is literally the sea 'in the middle' of the ancient world. The 'Mittelmeerraum' (Mediterranean region) is therefore the region around this sea.

Mediterranean Sea
'das Mittelmeer' and 'der Mittelmeerraum' are closely connected geographically, but they do not mean the same thing. 'Das Mittelmeer' is the sea itself, meaning the water between Europe, Africa, and Asia. 'Der Mittelmeerraum' means the whole region around this sea, including countries, coasts, cities, climate, and culture. The words can be confused because both have to do with the same area. When talking about swimming, ships, or water, 'Mittelmeer' fits. When talking about countries, travel, food, or climate in the region, 'Mittelmeerraum' is a better fit.
