A device that converts digital data for transmission over an analog medium (such as a telephone line or cable) and vice versa. It enables a computer to connect to the internet.

A Router and a Modem can both be involved in connecting to the internet and can be combined in one device. The Modem converts the data for transmission over the line, while the Router forwards it between the home network and the internet. The appropriate term therefore depends on the function meant.
