A device that converts digital data for transmission over an analog medium (such as a telephone line or cable) and vice versa. It enables a computer to connect to the internet.

'Modem' is a blend formed from the terms 'Modulator' and 'Demodulator'. This describes its technical function exactly: it modulates (converts) digital signals into analog ones and demodulates (converts back) analog signals into digital ones.

To express a connection, you use the preposition 'mit' (with), e.g. 'sich mit dem Modem verbinden' (to connect to the modem). When data is transmitted, the preposition 'über' (via/over) is common, e.g. 'Daten über das Modem senden' (to send data via the modem).

'die Box' and 'das Modem' can both be devices for internet access. In everyday language, 'Box' is often a general name for the device from the provider, for example an internet box or router box. 'Modem' is more precise: it describes a device that converts data for the internet connection. The words can be confused because modern devices have several functions and are often simply called a 'Box'. When the technical function is the focus, 'Modem' fits better; when you are speaking generally about the provider's device, 'Box' sounds more natural.
