A scholarly treatise that deals comprehensively and in detail with a single, narrowly defined topic. It is often written by a single author and frequently serves to publish research work such as a dissertation.

Dissertation and Monographie can both be extensive scholarly works by a single author. A Dissertation is submitted for a doctoral degree; a Monographie deals comprehensively with a limited topic and is often intended for publication. A Dissertation can later be published as a Monographie.
