In der Morphologie lernen wir, dass das Wort 'unfreundlich' aus drei Teilen besteht: 'un-', 'freund' und '-lich'.
In morphology, we learn that the word 'unfriendly' consists of three parts: 'un-', 'friend,' and '-ly.'
Usage tips
Word structure
The word comes from Greek: 'morphé' means 'form' or 'shape,' and 'lógos' means 'study' or 'doctrine.' Morphology is therefore always the 'study of form' in various scientific fields.
EXAMPLE
Die Endung „-logie“ deutet in vielen Wörtern auf eine Wissenschaft hin.
The ending '-logie' indicates a science or field of study in many words.
Context clue
To understand the meaning, pay attention to the context. If it is about words and language, the linguistic meaning is intended. With animals and plants, it is the biological meaning, and with landscapes or rock, it is the geoscientific meaning.
EXAMPLE
Im Biologieunterricht analysierten wir die Morphologie verschiedener Insekten.
In biology class, we analyzed the morphology of various insects.

Morphologie vs Grammatik
grammar
'die Grammatik' and 'die Morphologie' can both have to do with the rules of a language. 'Grammatik' is the more general term and means, for example, sentence structure, forms, and rules in a language. 'Morphologie' is more specific and, in linguistics, refers to the area that deals with word forms and word formation. The words can be confused because endings and forms often come up in grammar lessons. In everyday life and in language courses, people usually say 'Grammatik'. 'Morphologie' sounds more technical and is more suitable when talking specifically about the structure of words.

Im Seminar analysiert Daniel die Morphologie deutscher Verben.
