'kopieren' and 'nachbauen' have in common that something is created based on an existing model. 'kopieren' is broader: you can copy a document, a file, a text, or also a person's style. 'nachbauen' is used when you actually build something or make it as a model, for example a house, a device, or a vehicle. Learners may confuse the words because both can be a kind of copy. When it is about paper, data, or behavior, 'kopieren' is natural. When you build something new with material, 'nachbauen' fits better.
