The word is derived from 'der Nachdruck' (emphasis, firmness). 'Nachdruck' itself consists of 'nach' and 'Druck' (pressure). 'Nachdrücklich' (emphatic/emphatically) therefore literally means that you give something special pressure or weight.

'Nachdrücklich' (emphatically) is almost always used as an adverb that modifies a verb. Its use as an adjective before a noun, e.g. 'eine nachdrückliche Warnung' (an emphatic warning), is less common.

The word is often combined with verbs of speaking and demanding. 'deutlich' and 'nachdrücklich' can both describe that something is said or shown clearly. 'deutlich' mainly means that you can understand something well or recognize it clearly. 'nachdrücklich' goes one step further: it sounds forceful and firm, and shows that something is important. If someone speaks deutlich, you can understand the words well. If someone speaks nachdrücklich, you also notice their strong will or firm opinion.
Die Ärztin sagte nachdrücklich, dass Paul die Tabletten regelmäßig nehmen muss.
The doctor said emphatically that Paul has to take the pills regularly.
