'Nachforschen' (to investigate) is a separable verb. In a main clause, 'nach' usually appears at the end of the sentence; in a subordinate clause, 'nachforschen' stays together. In the infinitive with 'zu', 'zu' comes between the prefix and the verb.

'Nachforschen' (to investigate) consists of 'nach' and 'forschen' (to research). The prefix indicates that someone is deliberately pursuing information or an unresolved matter.

'Nachforschen' (to investigate) is often used with information about the source or topic, for example 'in alten Akten nachforschen' (to investigate in old files), 'in Archiven nachforschen' (to investigate in archives), or 'den Ursachen nachforschen' (to investigate the causes), with the dative.
