'überprüfen' and 'nachlesen' can both be used when you want to know something for sure. 'überprüfen' is more general: you can read, test, compare, or inspect something. 'nachlesen' always means that you look for or confirm information by reading, for example in a book, in a message, or on the internet. If you are checking a machine, an invoice, or an ID, you would more likely say 'überprüfen'. If you are looking for information in a text, 'nachlesen' is more natural.
